Snoozeluxe started with a dog. The Dobermann you see in all the product photos is ours. She is ten years old now, and very much one of a kind. In the garden she still charges around as if age is someone else's problem. But in the evenings - and on some mornings more than others - it becomes clear that getting up is harder than it used to be.

For most of her life she slept on a fitness mat with a vet bed on top, inside a dog basket. Easy to wash. Not ideal.

When she started showing signs of stiffness we decided it was time to find her a proper bed. Something with real orthopaedic support. It turned out to be harder than expected.

Why We Built It Ourselves

The market split fairly clearly into two categories. On one side were the "design" beds - expensive, good-looking, and not particularly forthcoming about what was actually inside them. On the other were cheap imported beds with foam that you could compress with one hand. There were brands in the United States that looked closer to what we had in mind, but shipping a large dog bed halfway around the world did not appeal. So we decided to make one ourselves.

We spent time learning about foam types, densities and compression load deflection. We settled on a two-layer design: a high-resilience foam base with a layer of memory foam on top. We had a mattress protector and an outer cover custom made. The first version of the Flat Bed was born.

The zipper ran along one side only. It took two people to get the mattress out of the cover. We noted that down and moved on.

Then our dog refused to use it.

We tried rewarding her with treats every time she stepped onto the bed, which helped. But she would not lie in the middle - she always positioned herself along the edge, with her head hanging off the side. At one point she fell out during the night while turning over. Having spent most of her life in a dog basket, she was used to having something to lean against. The flat, open surface gave her no sense of boundary or protection. That was something we had not considered.

We also quickly discovered that the memory foam was not working. It felt soft underfoot, but when a 35 kg dog walks across it there is very little stability. She actually had more difficulty getting up from the memory foam than she did from her old mat. We went back to the drawing board, this time using high-resilience foam throughout. HR foam responds immediately to changes in position and provides a stable, consistent surface - which is exactly what a heavier dog needs in order to push up and stand.

For the next version, we made the mattress protector and cover ourselves and built the bed in a sofa shape - a proper sleeping surface with raised edges on three sides to give that sense of containment she was looking for. That became the first version of the Sofa Bed. Several further iterations followed.

What We Learned Along the Way

Every design decision in a Snoozeluxe bed traces back to something that went wrong in an earlier version or that we found missing in what was already on the market.

The three-sided YKK® zipper is a good example. The zipper on our first prototype ran along one side and was difficult to open without the runner catching in the fabric. Cheap zippers are typically the first component to fail in a dog bed cover. We use YKK® throughout - they cost more, but they work reliably and keep working. The zipper runs over three edges so that one person can open the cover fully without any difficulty. It is visible rather than hidden. Some covers hide the zipper underneath the bed to keep the appearance clean, but this risks scratching floors and makes the cover harder to remove. We chose function over appearance.

The mattress protector exists because foam without a barrier absorbs moisture quickly and is almost impossible to clean once it does. Most dog beds place the foam directly inside the outer cover with nothing between them. We included a dedicated internal protector with a waterproof PU coating from the very first version for exactly this reason.

The modular construction - where every component can be replaced independently - came from recognising that replacing an entire bed because one part has worn out is wasteful and unnecessary. When the cover eventually shows wear after years of use, only the cover needs replacing. The foam, protector and underlay continue as they are.

What Snoozeluxe Is Today

The beds we make today are the result of that process. Every component is selected for a specific function within the overall system.

The foam core uses 40 kg/m³ high-resilience polyurethane foam - the same specification used in quality human seating and sleeping furniture. It maintains its shape under continuous load, distributes weight evenly and resists sagging over time. We state the foam density openly so it can be evaluated directly. Many dog beds on the market do not disclose this figure at all.

The outer cover uses Cordura® polyamide fabric, which achieves over 200,000 Martindale abrasion cycles - significantly above standard upholstery fabrics. It withstands daily scratching, friction and repeated washing without losing structure.

A dedicated internal mattress protector with a waterproof PU coating encloses the foam core completely, keeping it clean and extending the working life of the bed.

A separate anti-slip underlay keeps the bed stable on smooth floors. All materials are OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified and the beds are manufactured in Belgium.

The beds are also modular. A Flat Bed can be upgraded to a Lounge, Corner or Sofa configuration by adding headrests and a compatible cover - without replacing the mattress. This is how we adapted our own dog's bed as we learned more about what she actually needed.

The current range is available in black Cordura®. Additional cover colours and materials are in development and will be added to the range in due course.
