Every component in a Snoozeluxe dog bed is selected because it performs a specific function within the overall system. This page explains what each material is, why it was chosen and how it contributes to the long-term performance of the bed.

None of the materials listed here are chosen for appearance alone.

1. The Foam Mattress - 40 kg/m³ High-Resilience Polyurethane Foam

The foam mattress is the core of the bed. Everything else exists to protect it, cover it or support it. Choosing the right foam is the most consequential decision in the construction of an orthopaedic dog bed.

What it is

Snoozeluxe beds use high-resilience (HR) polyurethane foam with a density of 40 kg/m³. This is the same foam specification used in quality human seating and sleeping furniture. Foam density is expressed in kilograms per cubic metre and describes how much the foam resists deformation under load. At 40 kg/m³, the foam maintains its shape under sustained pressure, distributes body weight evenly across the contact surface and resists sagging over time.

Why not memory foam?

Memory foam compresses slowly and recovers slowly - it conforms to the body shape of the previous position rather than responding immediately to the current one. For dogs that move frequently during the night, this means the surface does not provide immediate support each time the dog shifts position. Memory foam also retains heat, which can make the sleeping surface uncomfortably warm, particularly for larger dogs. And under the sustained daily load of a heavier dog, memory foam tends to bottom out more quickly than high-resilience foam, losing its supportive properties faster.

HR foam responds immediately to changes in position, maintains a stable and consistent surface, stays cooler and holds its structural properties for longer. This is why Snoozeluxe uses HR foam across the entire range.

Why not lower-density foam?

Lower-density foams - common in budget dog beds - lose their structure relatively quickly under daily use. The foam compresses unevenly, begins to sag and provides progressively less support as the bed ages. Because many manufacturers do not disclose foam density, it is often impossible to evaluate a dog bed on this point without cutting it open. Snoozeluxe states the foam density openly so it can be assessed directly.

Mattress thickness

Mattress thickness works in combination with foam density. A thin mattress, even with good-quality foam, can compress fully under a heavier dog - a phenomenon known as bottoming out - at which point the dog is effectively resting on the base of the bed rather than on a supportive foam surface. To account for this, Snoozeluxe beds use a 10 cm mattress in sizes S and M, and a 15 cm mattress from size L upwards, where body weight is greater.

Crate beds use a thinner mattress by design. Inside an enclosed crate, mattress thickness directly reduces the headroom available to the dog. The reduced thickness is not a compromise on foam quality - both orthopaedic and crate beds use the same 40 kg/m³ HR foam - but a practical requirement of the environment the crate bed is designed for. Where floor space allows, an orthopaedic bed provides significantly more mattress thickness and usable surface than a crate bed used outside a crate.

The foam is sourced in Belgium.

2. The Mattress Protector - 65% Polyester / 35% Combed Cotton with PU Coating

The mattress protector surrounds the foam core completely and sits inside the outer cover. It is not an optional accessory - it is a functional component that determines how long the foam remains usable.

Why a mattress protector is necessary

Most dog beds place the foam directly inside the outer cover with nothing between them. Any moisture, dirt or odour that passes through or around the cover reaches the foam immediately. Once foam begins to absorb moisture or odour, it is very difficult to clean thoroughly, and the material begins to degrade. In practice, this means the bed loses its hygienic condition and eventually its structural integrity long before the foam itself has worn out mechanically.

The Snoozeluxe mattress protector acts as a dedicated barrier layer. It keeps the foam core clean, dry and odour-free, significantly extending the working life of the mattress.

What it is made from

The protector is constructed from a 65% polyester / 35% combed cotton fabric with a waterproof polyurethane (PU) coating on the inner surface. This combination provides reliable moisture resistance while keeping the material soft, flexible and quiet against the foam - without the stiff or crackling feel often associated with fully waterproof covers.

Because the seams and zipper are not sealed, the protector is not completely waterproof, but it provides effective protection against everyday moisture, dirt and accidents.

Access and maintenance

The protector opens via a YKK® zipper running along three sides, allowing it to be removed fully and washed independently. Machine washable at or below 30°C. Air dry only.

3. The Outer Cover - Cordura® Polyamide Fabric

The outer cover is the component that takes the most daily wear. It is in direct contact with the dog at all times - subject to scratching, friction, movement and repeated washing. Material selection here has a direct impact on how long the bed remains presentable and functional.

What Cordura® is

Cordura® is a high-tenacity polyamide (nylon) fabric originally developed for demanding applications such as outdoor equipment, protective clothing and technical luggage. It is not a marketing term - it refers to a specific class of fabric with defined performance characteristics.

The Cordura® fabric used in Snoozeluxe beds is 260 g/m², 100% polyamide 6.6, and achieves over 200,000 Martindale abrasion cycles. The Martindale test measures resistance to surface wear under repeated rubbing. For reference, standard residential upholstery fabrics typically achieve between 15,000 and 30,000 cycles. At over 200,000 cycles, the Snoozeluxe cover fabric is in a different category entirely.

What this means in practice

Daily scratching, digging, turning and friction that would cause pilling, thinning or tearing in a standard cover has no meaningful effect on Cordura®. The fabric maintains its surface structure and appearance under sustained use. Despite its durability, the material remains flexible and comfortable against the dog's coat.

The zipper - YKK® running over three sides

All Snoozeluxe covers use a YKK® zipper. YKK® is the benchmark for zipper reliability in demanding applications - the runner operates smoothly, the teeth lock securely and the mechanism continues to function correctly after years of repeated use. Cheap zippers are typically the first component to fail in a dog bed cover.

The zipper runs along three sides of the cover rather than being hidden on the underside. This allows one person to open the cover fully without the runner catching in the fabric or the cover needing to be held by a second person. Zippers hidden underneath a bed may look cleaner, but they are harder to operate, more likely to catch and can scratch floor surfaces when the runner contacts the ground.

The cover is machine washable at or below 30°C with the zipper closed. Air dry. Do not bleach, tumble dry or dry clean.

4. The Anti-Slip Underlay

The anti-slip underlay sits beneath the bed and increases friction between the base of the bed and the floor surface. It prevents the bed from shifting when the dog steps onto it or repositions during the night - which matters both for the dog's comfort and for the safety of the floor surface beneath.

What it is made from

The underlay is a structured vinyl material manufactured in Germany. It is designed for smooth floor surfaces including hardwood, laminate, tiles and vinyl, and is compatible with underfloor heating systems. On carpet, a separate underlay is generally not needed, as the carpet itself provides sufficient grip.

Maintenance and replacement

The underlay is separate from the bed and can be removed, hand washed at up to 40°C and air dried independently. It is also available as a replacement component if needed.

5. Modular Construction - Every Component Is Replaceable

Snoozeluxe beds are built as modular systems. The foam mattress, mattress protector, outer cover, headrest foams, headrest protectors, headrest covers and anti-slip underlay are all separate components that can be removed, washed and replaced independently.

This matters because different components wear out at different rates. The cover sees the most daily wear and will eventually need replacing before the foam does. The foam will eventually lose resilience after years of sustained use. The mattress protector can be washed regularly throughout the life of the bed. With a modular system, each component can be addressed on its own timeline - the cover can be replaced without touching the foam, and the foam can be replaced without buying a new cover.

A Flat Bed can also be converted into a Lounge, Corner or Sofa configuration over time by adding headrests and a compatible cover, without replacing the mattress. Upgrade sets with all the required components are available separately.

6. Certifications and Manufacturing

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100

All materials used in Snoozeluxe beds - the foam, mattress protector, outer cover fabric and anti-slip underlay - are individually OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an independent testing and certification system for textile raw materials and finished products. Certified materials have been tested for a defined list of harmful substances and confirmed safe for everyday use in contact with skin. The certification applies to each material individually. The finished bed as a whole is not certified as a product.

Manufactured in Belgium

All Snoozeluxe beds are manufactured in Belgium. European manufacturing allows for direct oversight of production quality, material sourcing and construction standards throughout the process.
